Because of their palpable long hair that adds up to their sweet image, there’s no doubt because Shih Tzus are one of the most loved dog breeds around the world. But, when a Shih Tzu haircut isn’t properly maintained, it can grow longer and thicker on their face and can even reach their eyes.

Hello, everyone. Welcome back. If you’re new here, welcome to Shih Tzu Care Guide, the ultimate beginner’s guide to first time Shih Tzu owners.

Should I cut the hair around my Shih Tzu’s eyes?

Yes, cut the hair around your Shih Tzu’s eyes because it can surely hamper their daily activities if left untrimmed. Or worse, it can damage their eyes. So, the most practical approach to prevent this is by monitoring your Shih Tzu’s hair length and trimming it regularly.

If you, as a pet owner, want to trim or groom your Shih Tzu’s without spending more money for a professional groomer, perform this at your home instead. But always make sure that your pup’s already used to grooming time and tools.

You won’t have to deal with a lot of unnecessary movements of your Shih Tzu when it’s familiar with this session. But, if your pups not used to this, you’ll definitely have to invest time patiently.

Before you go cutting the hair around your Shih Tzu’s eyes, use a stainless-steel face comb first so that it can comb those small portions of your dog’s hair. After this, use a hairbrush to brush away the knots or tangles in their hair.

Start brushing the hair around their eyes down to their nose. Remember to do it gently.

Make sure that you’re using a scissor only for Shih Tzus. For this, use 6.5 to 7 inches of scissors to cut your Shih Tzu’s hair. Make three sections of their hair; one on the left, the other on the right, and the middle in between their eyes just above their nose.

During trimming, your dog will obviously move, so use your free hand to hold their head so you can have an accurate measure of cutting.

In this way, you can also prevent poking their eyes. When done cutting the divided sections, do the trimming around their eyes and on their nose. Brush the hair away from their face and comb them properly to see if the haircut is finished.

All of this procedure is also the same as having a Shih Tzu haircut; it is time-consuming, yes. But only if you care about them and only want them to have an adorable, healthy, and suitable Shih Tzu haircut.

Should you cut the Shih Tzu’s eyelashes?

Definitely. Include cutting their eyelashes in trimming the hair around their face. Keeping them neat and clean by grooming and cutting their hair will prevent them from having health problems because, like a newborn baby, they are prone to infection.

As Shih Tzu fur parents, we all should keep in mind that having our Shih Tzu’s in our lives comes with extra time, patient, love, and care both physically and emotionally.

It doesn’t always have to be picking the cutest Shih Tzu haircut all the time. Nor does it always have to be wearing expensive dogs’ fashionable clothes. It rather comes with gently putting them in the comforts of our hands during the time of grooming, or hair trimming.

Also, if you’re worried about the harm brought by cutting their eyelashes, know that there’s only a possibility of harm if you cut them too much. Save enough portions of their eyelashes, as it can protect their eyes.

Use a grooming scissor that has round tips. This will prevent you from poking their eyes and skin. I like how this grooming scissor has an ergonomic design that fits my hand perfectly.

Like cutting the hair around their eyes and face, use your hand to hold their face or chin. Hold the scissors carefully. Do not cut without maintaining balance with your wrists.

If you directly cut their eyelashes while your dog is moving a lot or trying to free itself away from your grip, expect the worst.

Conclusion

A Shih Tzu haircut, as what’s stated above, should always accompany proper hair and eyelash trimming. You will not only keep your cute pup looking presentable, but you will also keep them healthy.

You should fully understand that before having a Shih Tzu, you’ll have to invest for the sake of their well-being.
